GREEN POWER Year 11 students from St Laurence School in Bradford-on-Avon will shortly be competing in the heats of 2008 Greenpower Formula 24 Electric Car Races for Schools. John Ambler, an RSVP volunteer who trained as an engineer, is helping them design and build their car, together with Nick Bell, a technician at the school who, as a student, took part in the Shell Eco-Challenge. They are their own race, against time to get their entry ready for the end of June.
OXFAM PETITION RSVP West knitters are supporting the “patchwork against poverty” petition initiated by Oxfam, which will demand a world where everyone has access to free basic healthcare. Oxfam want a quarter of a million nine-inch squares knitted to create a giant blanket, each square of which will represent a mother who did not survive pregnancy or childbirth because she couldn’t get the medical care she needed. It will be handed to the Government before the UN meetings in September to discuss Millenium Development goals, one of which is about reducing the number of women who die in childbirth. For further information contact Shirley Stark, RSVP West’s knitting coordinator, on 0117 929 3953.
